Ferrater Mora Chair Wins Award for Academic Excellence
4th October 2012
The Centre congratulates the Ferrater Mora Càtedra (Chair) for Contemporary Thought for winning the Vicens Vives Distinction for Academic Excellence awarded by the Catalan Government.
2012 is the centenary of Ferrater Mora’s birth. A number of lectures in his honour have already taken place and on 10th and 11th November PACMA (the political party that seeks to protect animals) will hold further events. These include a lecture by Centre Associate Director Professor Priscilla Cohn on “Ferrater and Animals”.
The Chair was established in 1989 by the University of Girona. The activities of the Chair include a series of seminars given every year by internationally known thinkers. The first seminar, initiated by Ferrater Mora himself, was followed by a series given by illustrious thinkers, such as Noam Chomsky, Eric Hobsbawn, Richard Rorty, and Peter Singer. The Chair has digitalized and made available to the public about 7,000 letters of Ferrater Mora’s correspondence from 1935-1991 as well as the more than 7,000 books and scholarly journals from his personal library.
The Centre is dedicated to the memory of Ferrater Mora. The Centre honours his name because of his outstanding contribution to humanitarian thought, particularly in the area of animal ethics.
