Press Release: ‘Animal Theology’ book now available in eight languages

18th December 2024

Animal Theology, written by Professor Andrew Linzey, is now available in eight languages, including Spanish, Italian, Croatian, Polish, and Japanese, with the Hungarian edition launching this month.

The landmark book challenges traditional negative views on animals found within Christianity and shows how theology can actually provide a strong basis for animal rights.

Linzey comments that: “At a time when we celebrate Christmas, we should remember not only that Jesus was born in a stable with animals, but also that the doctrine of the incarnation means that all creatures composed of flesh and blood participate both in creation and redemption. Christ is not just the redeemer of humans but animals also”.

This pioneering book was the first modern work to discuss the issue of animal rights within Christianity from a theological perspective.

“It is remarkable that this book, originally published in 1994, has found readers throughout the world. What was regarded as a marginal issue has now become mainstream and theologians worldwide are seriously taking up the issues raised by the book.” continues Linzey.

The new Hungarian edition (cover pictured) is published this month by Kairosz Kiadó and translated by theologians Miklós Szabó and Marianna Habány. “The translation of Animal Theology has been a profound source of inspiration for us. We are confident that this comprehensive and engaging work will be both thought-provoking and moving for Hungarian readers,” they say.

“It has been an honour to contribute to bringing this sensitive and significant book, imbued with both human and theological depth, to a Hungarian audience.”

Together, as husband and wife, they have translated several studies on spirituality and religious studies into Hungarian, and write a biblical blog titled “BibliaKultúra: Beyond the Text, Beneath the Stones” (#BibliaKultúra), which features valuable posts about the world of the Bible, with the aim of popularisation and the democratisation of knowledge.
