Fellow Edits Ground-breaking Human-Animal Studies Anthology

Fellow of the Centre, Professor Clifton P. Flynn, has edited a ground-breaking collection titled Social Creatures: A Human and Animal Studies Reader. Published by Lantern Books, it contains thirty-one essays from prominent human-animal studies scholars throughout the world. The reader is multidisciplinary in focus, with an emphasis on the social sciences. In addition to significant entries by sociologists, psychologists, and anthropologists, selections from seminal works in animal rights by Peter Singer, Tom Regan, Josephine Donovan, Carol Adams and Marjorie Spiegel are also included, as is a chapter from Centre Director Andrew Linzey.

According to Professor Flynn, “Because of the dramatic development and growth of the field of human-animal studies (or anthrozoology), the need for a collection of articles and chapters that represent the best of the diverse scholarship in this area became evident. With over 150 college human-animal studies courses in North America alone, and many more in Europe and beyond, I am hopeful that Social Creatures will be not only a valuable resource, but a vehicle for successfully introducing students to this important and exciting academic sub-field.”

Professor Flynn is Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Women’s Studies at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
